2023 IPL Mumbai Indians

2023 IPL could be Mumbai Indians' chance to return to title. At the 2023 IPL Auction, they bought Cameron Green at a price of NR 17.5. This five-time champion team's star team did not perform well last season. So they need a new force to make it back in 2023 IPL. Can they rely on this emerging force to return to the lineup of a strong team? Let's take a look at this veteran team Cameron Green at a price of NR 17.5. This five-time champion team's star team did not perform well last season. So they need a new force to make it back in 2023 IPL. Can they rely on this emerging force to return to the lineup of a strong team? Let's take a look at this veteran team.

Team history

Mumbai Indians is the most successful team in the Indian Premier League, having won a total of five titles since their inception in 2008. Owned by India’s biggest conglomerate – Reliance Industries, through its 100% subsidiary IndiaWin Sports – this powerhouse team has been playing its home matches in the 33,108-capacity Wankhede Stadium located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. In 2017, MI became the first IPL franchise to cross the $100 million mark in brand value. This success is evident as they remain the highest valued team among all IPL franchises for four consecutive years now, with an estimated brand value of ₹809 crore (roughly $115 million) as of 2019.

Mumbai have achieved numerous milestones throughout their thirteen-year history - winning their first Champions League title after beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 31 runs, going on to become the third team ever to win more than one IPL title by defeating Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs in 2015 and becoming the first franchise to win three IPL titles when they defeated Rising Pune Supergiant by 1 run in 2017. Furthermore, they also made history for being the first team to win 100 Twenty20 matches and becoming the first team to clinch a fifth IPL crown – this time topping Delhi Capitals with a five wicket win on 10 November 2020 in the final match of tournament.

Captain Rohit Sharma is currently at the helm of MI who are also coached by former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene since 2017. In addition, Sharma is also the leading run scorer while Lasith Malinga holds records as Mumbai's leading wicket taker.

Ahead of the 2022 IPL mega auctions, MI retained their four core players – Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard and Surya Kumar Yadav – while Hardik Pandya was not brought back. They later made an impressive statement in the auction by purchasing Ishan Kishan for a hefty sum of ₹15.25 crore (second highest bid for an Indian player till date).

Unfortunately for the team, despite their efforts in the auction house, they started their IPL season with a dismal record - losing their first eight matches which is the worst performance in the history of the tournament. With just four wins out of 14 matches in total, MI finished at the bottom of the points table making it their worst season yet.

Home ground

For the first two IPL seasons, Mumbai hosted their home games at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Come 2010, all seven of their home matches were played at the Brabourne Stadium while the Wankhede Stadium underwent renovation to host group matches and the grand 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final. Not only did they win all but one of their matches, they left a lasting impression on all who witnessed them as well.

Today, MI continues to call Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai their home. The stadium is named after former BCCI President S. K. Wankhede and owned by the Mumbai Cricket Association with a seating capacity of 33,108.

Team identity

Team motto.

The inspiring words "Duniya Hila Denge Hum..." ("We will rock the world") are the rallying cry of MI. This motto was made even more powerful when Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan himself voiced their first anthem, crafted in honor of this memorable slogan.

logo design

They proudly bears the iconic Sudarshan Chakra as their logo, which was chosen when the team was set to be named "Mumbai Razors". However, Sachin Tendulkar suggested the now-famous name of 'Mumbai Indians', thus sealing the fate of this logo.

Jersey colours

Since the inception of IPL in 2008, the team sported a jersey in blue with golden stripes on either side. For 2008 and 2009, Idea was the primary sponsor with minor variations in colour shades between seasons. However, a massive overhaul happened in 2010 when they introduced a new kit infused with gold stripes. Continuing to use this design in 2011 with Hero Honda as the main sponsor, three more gold stripes were added at the back for the new players. Adidas supplied their kit from 2008-14 until Reliance Trends' own brand Performax took over from 2015 onwards.

Conclusion

MI's decision in the 2023 IPL Auction showed their determination, hoping that Green's strength can lift Mumbai out of the bottom of the field.
